Glazed Hakurei Turnips

Man do we love these turnips at Piccalilli Farm!  This recipe takes the natural sweetness of these little beauties and elevates them with browning and maple syrup.  This whole recipe can be done stove top, just add a bit of water in the beginning and cook covered.

2 bunches turnips - trimmed to even size, greens reserved

3 TBSP butter

1/4 cup maple syrup

1 big old pinch of salt

  1. Preheat oven to 350, melt the butter in a saucepan, and trim up them beautiful turnips! (no need to peel!)

  2. Toss turnips, butter, and salt together. Slide into the oven for 20 to 30 minutes The turnips should yield to a knife inserted with just a little resistance.

  3. Pull the pan out, turn the oven up to 450, pour in the syrup, shake it all around so it’s coated and then put the turnips back in the oven. If you are so inclined to add the greens (optional), this would be the time.

  4. In about 5 to 10 minutes the turnips should be glazed nicely. You have to monitor this step with a just a little vigilance as the syrup can burn.
